Bobbin Lace Basics
| Basic Patterns | Learning the Basics |
Cloth stitch strip lesson. |
If you print this at full size, you will have strips
for several different thread sizes to choose from. It requires 6 pairs, which do not need to be wound in pairs. |
At the original size the pattern uses DMC or Anchor
Cordonnet 40, pearl 12, Bockens linen 35/2. It requires 6 pairs = 12 bobbins. They do not need to be wound in pairs. |
Tallies lesson |
Tallies: square and leaf shaped. |
circle |
6 pairs, wound in pairs. In the colored parts each line represents 1 pair. Refer to the international color code for the stitches: purple = cloth stitch, green = half stitch, red = doublestitch TCTC. Light blue = braid/plait. Yellow = tally (rectangular tally). For full size pattern try pearl cotton #5. On the full size pattern I used DMC Brilliant Crochet Cotton, article 981. I don't think they make it any more. It is comparable in size to pearl 5 cotton or cordonnet #10. I also worked the full size pattern in 20/2 linen, which is similar in size to cordonnet #20. I liked it much better in 20/2. The design was clearer. For Cordonnet #30 reduce to 71%.. Reduce to 63% if you want to use # 40 Cordonnet or Pearl 12. Reduce to 41% and try tatting cotton #80. It could then decorate a pincushion. Just sew it onto the top of the pincushion. |
For practicing different edge stitches. 10 pairs, wound in pairs. For full size pattern try pearl cotton #5. Reduce to 50% and try tatting cotton #80. Use it as an edging for a pincushion, or sew it onto the top of one. |
Easy Patterns |
Using What You Have Learned |
Print the pattern at 70%. It should be 168 mm
long. At that size use DMC or Anchor Cordonnet 60, Bockens linen
50/2, Moravia linen 40/2, Fresia linen 60/2. It requires 24 bobbins, not wound in pairs. This was printed in Mincoff & Marriage, 1907. But they got it from LePompe 1559. |
Print at 125%. It should be 180 mm long.
At that size use DMC or Anchor Cordonnet 60, Bockens linen 50/2, Moravia
linen 40/2, Fresia linen 60/2. It requires 12 pairs of bobbins, wound in pairs. This is from LePompe II 1562, reprinted in 1879. Available online at: |
![]() Lesson 3 |
Pattern is from Handleiding voor Vrouwelijke Handwerken #11
(Instructions for Women's Handwork), A. W. Sijthoff, Leiden,
the file is hw11.pdf . Find it at http://www.cs.arizona.edu/patterns/weaving/books.html This is in the 1st part of the list, with no authors listed. I designed the corner. I enlarged the pattern to 125% and used a 60/2 weaving linen and Moravia linen 40/2. Cordonnet crochet cotton #60 or Bockens linen 50/2 would also fit that size. The original should should work with #80 tatting cotton. |
I enlarged it to 150% of the original size and used
40/2 weaving linen. Bockens linen 35/2, DMC Cordonnet #40, or
pearl cotton #12 would be comparable in size. 12 pairs of bobbins, or 24 singles. This is from LePompe II 1562, reprinted in 1879.
